Wind Power Generation

INTRODUCTION

Devices called wind turbines turn wind energy into electricity.

“Wind turns the propeller-like blades of a turbine around a rotor, which spins a generator, which creates electricity.” —ENERGY.GOV

ACTIVITY 1

Pinwheel Making (Instructions Provided by instructables.com)

Materials: Colored papers, straws, paper pin fasteners, a pencil, a sharp pointed tool, scissors, a single hold puncher // Duration: 15 minutes

  • Any child participating in this activity should do so under adult supervision.

  • The link below contains step-by-step instructions (with visuals) on how to make a pinwheel.

  • Once participants are done creating their pinwheels, explain that the way their crafts function is similar to how wind turbines work.

ACTIVITY 2

Explore Wind Turbines

Source: ENERGY.GOV // Duration: 10 minutes

  • Learn how wind turbines work.

  • Explore the different parts of a wind turbine.

LESSON

Wind is a renewable energy source, so getting electricity via wind turbines is a lot better for the environment compared to other popular methods. When applied correctly, wind turbines are capable of generating vast amounts of energy and providing major amounts of power to the electrical grid.
