Clearcutting

INTRODUCTION

Clearcutting is a logging method in which natural forests are harvested and mass-cut, then replaced with man-made tree plantations.

“The forests are the ‘lungs’ of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

ACTIVITY

Letter of Thanks

Materials: Paper and a pen/pencil // Duration: 10 - 15 minutes

  • There are many organizations that are working very hard to protect rainforests from deforestation and clearcutting. Receiving letters from the younger generation will reinforce their visions of a better future for everyone.

  • Write a thank-you note to any deforestation agency.

LESSON

Most timber companies replace the forests logged with their own tree plantations. Despite this, clearcutting is still harmful to the environment due to the amount of biodiversity lost in the process.
