K-selected and r-selected species

INTRODUCTION

r-selected species produce many offspring but put a very small investment into each. They are usually more common among smaller animals. This is in contrast with K-selected species that have few offspring but put heavy investment into each.

What’s your Favorite Animal?

Materials: paper, pen/pencil, colored pencils // Duration: 10 -15minutes

  • Draw your favorite animal and color it in

  • Write two sentences about if it is an r-selected or K-selected species and why you think so

LESSON

r-selected and K-selected species are the two extreme ends of types of animals. Most species fall somewhere in between.
